The speedometer/Tachometer cables we supply are made in house by
Timeless Motorcycles and are made to Smiths original specification.
This point is critical to prevent damage to your instrument. In recent years, many imported cables have been supplied with an inner cable that is too long. An over length inner places constant upward pressure on the instrument mechanism, leading to premature wear or complete failure.
Our fitment guide library ensures we supply the correct cable for the exact year and model of your machine, for both speedometer and rev counter/tachometer applications. If you are unsure of your cable length, or if you believe your machine differs from the guide, please measure the outer cable length so we can supply the correct item.
It is important to note that cables are not interchangeable across different years or instrument types. Even small changes in nut length, drive type, or inner cable specification will affect fit and can damage the instrument if the wrong type is fitted.
At the speedometer head, there are generally only two cable nut types:
Short nut
Long nut
Chronometric instruments fitted up to 1964 used the short nut type. When Smiths introduced the magnetic instruments from late 1964 onward, the design changed to the long nut fitting.
The smaller 60 mm magnetic speedometers, used from the mid 1950s, also underwent a cable and instrument redesign in late 1964, so correct identification is essential.
PLEASE SEE OUR CABLE FITMENT GUIDE BELOW.
New Chronometric instruments made after 1964 mainly for police use had an extended neck at the bottom of the threads like the magnetic type. This type of instrument takes a very special cable which we can supply in any length to order. Fitting the incorrect cable will result in serious instrument damage. We can in most cases supply the early type Jaeger shaft driven chronometric cables in two forms. i.e. original type metal outer casing or rubber covered..
